Ireland Fans Bring Bus Back To Life For Euro 2016

Malahide man, Andy Bennett, is sending an invitation to “stragglers” who wish to come on board and travel with them on the bus, which carried passengers around the capital in 1991.

There first destination will be Saint-Denis, where the Republic of Ireland play their opening game against Sweden on Monday night. The supporters said: “I’m so excited. I can’t stop thinking about it.”

The bus does not have a shower but the lads have a toilet and fashioned up a “hose”.

“The bus is in really good condition. It’s got a couple of toilets on it. There’s no shower but there’s a generator and I guess you’d call it a hose,” Mr Bennett told the Press Association.

Mr Bennett, runs Harry’s Cafe Bar, a family caffee in Dun Laoghaire. His original plan was to travel with 11 fans on board but found it difficult to organise. Only himself and one of his friends Kevin Johnson, 33, from Skerries, are staying for the entirety of the trip, with plenty of room on the bus for their journey to Lille, where the Republic of Ireland take on Italy.

“Me and Kevin are the only two on the bus who are there from the start to the finish. A lot of our friends couldn’t get time off work etc, could only go for one or two games, could only come for the last game and stuff like that.”

“The plan is hopefully to pick up some stragglers along the way. We’re going to have obviously seven spare beds.”

The ideal stragglers? Andy said: “Anyone who’s Irish!”
